Carolina Special plays authentic 'Carolina-style' hard-core traditional bluegrass music in the style of Flatt & Scruggs, Jim Eanes, Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. Considered one of the top bluegrass bands in Northern California, the group has extensive performing experience, having appeared at events such as the coveted Grass Valley CBA Father's Day Festival, as well as many private parties, clubs, special events and concerts.
Carolina Special is lead by John Murphy on lead vocals and guitar, and Matt Dudman on tenor vocals and mandolin. Both men are well respected, experienced musicians, having performed with most of the top pickers in the state, John leading Carolina Special for a quarter century and Matt with both Tall Timpber and the MacRae Brothers. They are joined by George Goodell, a dedicated baritone singer and Scruggs-style banjo picker, Kevin Bennett, one of the very best traditional fiddlers int ehr state, and John Duncan, a well known bluegrass enthusiast on string bass.
These men share a burning desire to create an entertaining, professional quality bluegrass music program, featuring laid-back but heartfelt multiple-part harmony singing, interspersed with tasty instrumental licks, all backed by a driving rhythm section, in a fast-paced, engaging stage show, including a professional appearance and the neo-traditional 'single microphone' approach.
