Billy Idol was born in Middlesex, England,
in 1955. At age two, his father moved his family to Long Island, New York, in
pursuit of the “American Dream.” They returned to England four years
later, but America made a monumental impression on Billy
Idol. He was captivated by American rock music. Billy started his first
band, The Rockettes, who played covers of bands such as, The Beatles and The
Doors. When Billy Idol met Tony James, and
became Chelsea then Generation X, they started to get recognition. The band
played their first show in November 1976, and started to write and record original
material. In 1977, they signed a recording contract with Chrysalis Records.
After three albums and the decline of the punk movement, Billy
Idol decided to go solo. Billy Idol
released the self-titled album Billy Idol in
1982. The successful videos for 'White Wedding' and 'Dancing With Myself' launched
him into the spotlight. However, in 1990 at the time of the release of his album
Charmed Life, Billy Idol was in a motorcycle
accident and almost lost a leg. Despite the accident, the album was a success
and was the fourth album in a row to achieve platinum sales. Billy
Idols ‘Greatest Hits’ was released in 2001 and sold more
than half a million copies in the U.S. Billy Idol
was featured in two VH1 specials, Behind the Music and Storytellers, in the
year 2002.Billy Idol is currently working on
new material, some of which has featured in the most recent tours over the past
four years.
