Singer and songwriter, Ziggy Marley was born in Kingston Jamaica in 1968. As the
oldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley has followed in his father’s
footsteps in the music scene. Ziggy Marley has made a name for himself as one of the
top reggae artists of the century. After his father’s death in 1981, Ziggy
and his siblings, Stephen, Sharon, and Cedella formed the band, the Melody Makers.
The band released their first album, Play the Game Right, in 1985, which did not
catch on with listeners. The group then became Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers
and they released their album titled, Conscious Party in 1988. The album allowed
the group break through to mainstream audiences. The song “Tomorrow People”
became very popular, and the album did well on the pop and R&B charts. That
year the group received a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording. The song “Tomorrow
People” became popular with many listeners, and the album did well on both
the pop and R&B/hip-hop charts in the United States. That year, the group
brought home the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording. Their next album, One
Bright Day (1989) was another critical success. The group won a Grammy Award for
Best Reggae Recording in 1989. They made many more albums together in the 1990s,
including the Grammy Award-winning, Babylon Is Fallen, before later breaking up.
Ziggy Marley released a solo album, Dragonfly, in 2003. His next album Love Is My Religion
(2006), won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2006.
